Aythya Hybrid Duck

The first picture of is a Pochard x Tufted hybrid photographed on 4/4/2009 at Redcar Tarn (more pictures in archived posting). The following three pictures were taken this morning also at Redcar Tarn. Returning bird? (Note that whilst today's bird looks much darker the pictures were taken in less favourable light hence the apparent different colouration).

LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER

Male bird at Upper Coach Road this week.

Bempton Birding

Good numbers of very photogenic Tree Sparrows around the car park and visitor centre.

Very few Razorbills present on the cliffs at the beginning of the week but numbers had increased substantially by Thursday.

Gannets are back in huge numbers and were very active proclaiming territory and restoring old nest sites.
Couldn't omit the classic Puffin pose - just lacking the sandeels! Very few on the cliffs Monday but had started to return by Thursday.

Found this winter plumaged Guillemot amongst the thousands in breeding plumage (not many bridled birds seen though).

Fulmars - one of my favourite birds.

Stalling Gannet.
Huge numbers of Kittiwakes were as noisy as ever.

A Golden Oldie at Whetstone

Not sure who will remember this little gem that spent a couple of days at Whetstone. I found the clips whilst copying some old analogue tapes. Anybody remember the date?

Dunlin at Redcar Tarn 12th March

Present at 7.10a.m. until 7.40 when it was disturbed by the inevitable dog walkers. It seemed to have no difficulty in finding lots of worms to eat.

Great Grey Shrike

Located on the A59 on tree saplings near just west of Pace Gate (SE115547), 4 km WSW of Kex Gill.
