I've managed to get this fly identified as Tachina grossa.
From Tachinid Recording Scheme website: "This species is one of Britain’s largest flies and is very distinctive with its black bristle body and yellow head. The hosts are large hairy caterpillars (like Eggar moths) and so they favour heaths and ancient woodland."
